Group A

What is Pabron?
This medication is a non-drowsy tablet for general use. Like DayQuil, which is commonly used worldwide, it helps relieve symptoms of cold and flu.
Best for: General purpose
Active ingredients per dose:
| Pabron 50 | DayQuil |
| – Acetaminophen 150 mg – Potassium guaiacolsulfonate 80 mg – Ophiopogon root dry extract 600 mg | – Acetaminophen 650 mg – Dextromethorphan HBr 20 mg – Phenylephrine HCI 10 mg |
Dosage:
[Age 15 and over]
4 tablets, 3 times a day
[Under 15 years]
Do not take
Similarities
Non-Drowsy:
Both are designed for daytime use. They skip the antihistamines (like Diphenhydramine) that usually make you feel sleepy.
The Backbone:
Both rely on Acetaminophen to handle your fever, headache, and sore throat.
Differences
Western Science vs. Kampo (Herbal Medicine) :
Pabron 50 is unique because it’s a hybrid medicine. It combines a standard dose of Acetaminophen with Bakumondoto, a traditional Japanese/Chinese herbal formula specifically used to moisten the throat and soothe a dry cough. DayQuil, on the other hand, uses Dextromethorphan, a laboratory-synthesized antitussive that acts on the brain to suppress the cough reflex.
Stimulants :
Standard DayQuil is caffeine-free, but many American “Day” formulas are known for being quite strong. Pabron 50 specifically markets itself as caffeine-free, making it a good choice for people who are sensitive to jitters or want less strenuous on your body.

What is Caconal 2?
This medication is Caconal 2. Like Benylin All‑In‑One Cold & Flu Syrup, which is commonly used worldwide, it helps relieve symptoms of cold and flu. It is best taken when you feel a chill accompanied by a stiff neck, helping to gently warm your body and loosen muscle tension.
What is Tsumura Maoto?
This medication is Tsumura-Kampo-Liquid Maoto. Like Benylin All-In-One Cold & Flu Syrup, which is commonly used worldwide, it helps relieve symptoms of cold and flu. This is a stronger formula specifically designed to sweat out a high fever and relieve intense joint or muscle pain during the very early stages of a flu-like illness.
Best for: early-stage cold symptoms (no spontaneous sweating), head colds, rhinitis, headaches, stiff shoulders, muscle pain, pain in hands and shoulders.
Active ingredients per dose:
| Caconal 2 | Tsumura Maoto | Benylin Syrup |
| Daily dose 90 mL (30 mL x 3 bottles) of this medicine contain 90mL of Kakkonto extract of the following mixed crude drugs; – JP Kakon 8g – JP Ephedra 4g – JP Ephedra 4g – JP cinnamon 3g – JP Peony 3g – JP Glycyrrhiza 2g – Japanese Ginger 1g (JP: The Japanese Pharmacopoeia) | Daily dosage 90 mL (30 ml×3 bottles) of this medicine contain 81 mL of Maoto extract of the following mixed crude drugs; – JP Apricot Kernel 5.0 g – JP Ephedra Herb 5.0 g – JP Cinnamon Bark 4.0 g – JP Glycyrrhiza 1.5 g (JP: The Japanese Pharmacopoeia) | – Dextromethorphan HBr 30mg – Pseudoephedrine HCI 60mg – Guaifenesin 200mg – Acetaminophen 1000mg |
Dosage:
Caconal
[Age 15 and over]
Drink one bottle, 2 times a day
[Under 15 years]
Do not take
Maoto
[Age 15 and over]
Drink one bottle, 3 times a day
[Under 15 years]
Do not take
Similarities
Format:
All three are liquid/syrup types, making them easy to swallow and fast-absorbing compared to pills.
Goal:
They are all multi-symptom formulas designed to tackle a cluster of cold and flu issues (fever, aches, chills) in one go.
Differences
Kampo (Kakonarl/Maoto):
These are pro-active. They help your body’s natural defense by raising your temperature and making you sweat. They want to push the cold out of your system.
Benylin All-In-One:
This is re-active. It uses chemicals to hide your symptoms (cough, pain, congestion) so you can get through your day. It doesn’t help your body fight; it just makes you feel less miserable.
Because they both try to lower your fever (one by sweating, one by chemicals), never take them at the same time.
If you’re in Japan and can get enough rest, I’d suggest Kampo—it’s gentle on your body and works well for cold symptoms.
If you just want to get through the discomfort, take a look at Group D.
Then how can you choose one of two, Caconal 2 vs Tsumura Maoto?
| Category | Kakonarl 2 (Kakkonto) | Tsumura Kampo Oral Liquid Maoto |
| Main Symptoms | Stiff neck and shoulders, chills, headache, and early-stage cold symptoms. | High fever, joint and muscle pain, cough, and chills (often for flu-like symptoms). |
| Main Active Ingredients | Pueraria Root (Kakon), Ephedra (Maou), Cinnamon Bark, Peony Root, etc. (7 herbs total). | Ephedra (Maou), Apricot Kernel (Kyōnin), Cinnamon Bark, and Licorice. (4 herbs total). |
| Main Target | Muscle Tension with Kakon | Fever & Pain with Maou |
Pro-tip: Take these before you break a sweat. If you’re already sweating, skip them—they’ll just wear you out! If so, it is better to take a look of Group F instead!

Both are designed to treat general symptoms (cough, cold, fever, and aches).
Drowsiness:
Both medications may cause drowsiness after taking them. It’s best to use them at bedtime and avoid driving or operating machinery.
Differences
Approach:
NyQuil uses high-dose sedatives to stop coughs and pain for sleep, while S.TAC / Pabron S uses a multi-ingredient formula to remove mucus and treat the throat lining.
Airway Care:
While NyQuil focuses on silencing the cough reflex to ensure uninterrupted sleep, S.TAC / Pabron S uses ingredients like Ambroxol to actively repair the throat’s natural filters and help the body expel mucus.
Then how can you choose one of two, S.TAC vs Pabron S?
Both S.TAC and Pabron S are heavyweights in the Japanese all-in-one cold medicine market. To keep it simple, think of Pabron as the “Global Standard Style” and S.TAC as the “Powerful Pain & Fever Specialist.”
S.TAC: Main Strength: It uses Ibuprofen to take an aggressive stance against severe body pain, inflammation, and high fevers, making it a heavy-hitter for intense symptoms.
Pabron S: Main Strength: It uses Acetaminophen to provide a well-rounded and gentle balance for the whole family, focusing on standard relief for common cold symptoms.
Based on the features above, just pick the one that feels like a better fit for you. Either way, both work for colds.

Active ingredients per a day: L-carbocisteine 1500mg, with both Mucodyne Pro & Mucodyne.
Dosage:
[Age 15 and over]
1 tablets, 3 times a day
[Under 15 years]
Do not take
Similarities
Both of these are L-carbocisteine-only medicines, designed just for persistent phlegm. They won’t help with pain or fever. The tablet form is taken one at a time.
Differences
However, the dosage is different. Overseas, L-carbocisteine is commonly taken 375 mg per tablet as Mucodyne or 750 mg as prescribed, but this medicine contains 500 mg per tablet. L-carbocisteine is the ingredient name, while Mucodyne is the brand name. This Mucodyne Expectorant Pro 500 contains the same amounts of L-carbocisteine as Japanese prescription-grade drugs.

Spray 2-3 times onto the lining of your throat, several times a day as needed.

Easy to carry and convenient
Differences
Nozzle:
Japan’s Isodine uses a straight-jet nozzle for precise throat spraying, while global Betadine sprays a wider mist that can taste stronger.

What is Medicon?
This medication is Medicon Cough Suppressant Pro. Similar to Robitussin Long-Acting CoughGels, which many of you may already be familiar with, this single-ingredient formula is designed specifically to calm the cough reflex and provide targeted symptomatic relief—particularly when a persistent cough is interfering with sleep or daily activities.
Best for: A bothersome cough, especially in the absence of other cold-related symptoms.
Active ingredients per dose:
| Medicon Pro | Robitussin |
| Dextromethorphan HBr 30 mg in 2 tablets | Dextromethorphan HBr 30 mg in 2 capsules |
Dosage:
[Age 15 and over]
2 tablets, 3 times a day
[Under 15 years]
Do not take
Similarities
Two are bacially the same!
Both of these are Dextromethorphan HBr (DXM) – only medicines, designed just for reducing the cough reflex, helping patients rest more comfortably while the underlying cause of the cough is being treated. They won’t help with pain or fever. The tablet form is taken one at a time.
Differences
However, the maximum daily dosage differs between products. While Robitussin can typically be taken up to four times per day, Medicon is generally limited to three doses daily.
If symptom control remains insufficient with cough suppression alone, we may consider adding an expectorant such as Mucodyne to help clear mucus, or in some cases recommend a multi-symptom cold formulation, depending on the overall clinical picture.
